Despite Lucy Lawless' publicly denying that a reboot
of the 90's fantasy action series Xena: Warrior Princess was in development,
NBC Entertainment Chairman Bob Greenblatt confirmed with The Hollywood Reporter
at the TCA's that they are actively trying to bring an updated version of the
iconic TV series back to the small screen.
"Yes,
we're in the early stages of developing a new take on Xena and
we're looking for a writer. We want to do
it," Greenblatt said.
Back in July a report came out saying that NBC
Universal International was looking to reboot the beloved TV series with
original executive producers Sam Raimi and Rob Tapert (Lawless' husband). The
report also claimed that the new Xena would have to have the charisma of
Lawless and the smarts of Katniss from The Hunger Games.
As for Lawless' return, Greenblatt says that they
would love for the actress to be a part of the new show as long as her presence
doesn't "overshadow" this new take on the property, and even then he
isn't "sure how she could be part of it if
she wasn't playing Xena, and I don't know if that's a direction we'll ever
go," he said.
Greenblatt did however said that he
would be open to the idea of having the actress creatively involved in the new
series, but behind-the-scenes.
