After the Transformers, G.I.
Joe, Ouija, Battleship, and Jem and the Holograms it's time for another Hasbro
property to get the feature film treatment.
Hasbro Allspark Pictures and
Lionsgate are teaming up to produce and finance respectively, a Monopoly
feature film with Andrew Niccol (The Truman Show) set to write the script,
which is expected to be set in the world of Monopoly and focus on a boy from
the Baltic Avenue, who sets out into the world to make his fortune.
"Hasbro is a
partner with incredible global reach, one of the most compelling brand
portfolios in the world, and a signature brand in Monopoly that has
multigenerational appeal," said Lionsgate Motion Picture Group
co-president Erik Feig.
"Andrew Niccol is the ultimate world creator responsible for such
disparate and imaginative films as ‘The Truman Show,’ ‘Gattaca’ and ‘The
Terminal,'" Feig added. "He is an inspired choice to develop this
timeless property into a big, crowd-pleasing event film that will appeal to
kids, families and anyone who has ever played the Monopoly game."
Not having an inbuilt
story like other board games have is a plus for Monopoly since it essentially means
it can go anywhere and do anything, but in a world increasingly divided by
economical strife, is a movie about capitalism and its "qualities" (since
I'm assuming they won't vilify the game) go well with audiences? On paper yes! The
game has been around for 80 years, has sold 275 million units in 111 countries
and in 43 languages.
Next year expect to
hear about a story of four hippo brothers that go on a binge eating frenzy
because they are very, very hungry.
