After unveiling most
of the cast in the first official images from Bryan Singer's X-Men: Apocalypse,
Entertainment Weekly continues with their coverage of the anticipated film with
a few tidbits of information about the film, and a closer look at the young
blood that will hopefully inherit the franchise.
As we know,
Apocalypse picks up ten years after the 1970's events of Days of Future Past,
with Professor Charles Xavier (James McAvoy), Mystique (Jennifer Lawrence), and
Magneto (Michael Fassbender) still very much estranged from one another. However,
their paths are destined to cross once more when Apocalypse (Oscar Isaac)
awakens from his tomb, and decides to give this strange new world an evolutionary
makeover.
"It’s a chaotic
world of conflict and war and destruction," Singer told the outlet of
Apocalypse's return. "It’s one giant civilization that now requires one
giant culling. That’s why he needs special assistants in this process."
By "assistants"
Singer means the Four Horseman, i.e. Angel (Ben Hardy), who is participating in
a fight club in Berlin, Storm (Alexandra Shipp) who is living in the streets of
Cairo, Psylocke (Olivia Munn), who is working in Eastern Europe for a mutant
powerbroker called Caliban (Tómas Lemarquis), and Magneto (Michael Fassbender), who is trying to
rebuild his life in Poland with a woman he loves. "He’s fallen in love and
he’s basically left his metal ways behind," Fassbender said of where his
character is in the sequel. "Apocalypse finds Erik at a low ebb and
recruits him."
The last time we saw
Mystique (Jennifer Lawrence) she was getting ready to send a helpless Wolverine
to the lab to be studied, and probably infuse him with adamantium. This time
however, her goals seem much more peaceful as she is trying to help out mutants
in need, including a young Nightcrawler (Kodi Smit-McPhee), until that is, she
hears of Magneto's fate and joins Charles, whose school for the gifted has flourished with many more students including Jean Grey (Sophie Turner), and
Cyclops (Tye Sheridan).
Opening on May 27, 2016,
X-Men Apocalypse also stars Lana Condor as Jubilee, Nicholas Hoult (Beast), Rose
Byrne (Moira MacTaggert), Lucas Till (Havok) and Evan Peters (Quicksilver).
