With Boston doubling in for New York in
writer/director Paul Feig's female led Ghostbusters, the Boston Herald has uncovered
some details about Kristen Wiig and Melissa McCarthy's ghost busting
characters.
Wiig and McCarthy play a pair of unheralded authors
who write a book positing that ghosts are real. Flash forward a few years and
Wiig lands a prestigious teaching position at Columbia U. Which is pretty sweet, until her book resurfaces and
she is laughed out of academia.
Wiig reunites with McCarthy and the other two proton
pack-packing phantom wranglers, and she gets some sweet revenge when ghosts
invade Manhattan and she and her team have to save the world.
Kate McKinnon and Leslie Jones are "the other two
proton pack-packing phantom wranglers", but before they were announced as
such, plenty of other names were considered, including Emma Stone's, whom Bill
Murray personally championed for.
Speaking to The Wall Street Journal the actress revealed
that she was approached for the role, and even read the script, but ultimately
had to turn it down.
The script was really funny. It just didn’t feel
like the right time for me. A franchise is a big commitment—it’s a whole thing. I
think maybe I need a minute before I dive back into that water.
Considering how The Amazing Spider-Man 2 turned out, it's
not really a surprise that Stone had second thoughts about joining yet another
franchise.
But that's in the past and what we really want to know
is why production is shutting down some of Boston's financial district? Well,
it seems that much like in Ghostbusters 2 there will be an "epic ghost
invasion of Manhattan". The Boston Herald also says that Slimer will
return, though they are less certain about Dan Aykroyd and Bill Murray, whom
they claim are negotiating.
With Chris Hemsworth set to play the team's
receptionist, Ghostbusters hits theaters on July 22.
