The idea of Idris Elba playing James Bond is one that
has been around for a number of years. Our first whiff of the possibility that
the Luther star was actually in the list of actors up for the role came when Sony
Pictures got hacked and emails from its co-chairman, Amy Pascal revealed that
she was interested in the actor for the iconic role.
A lot has happened since, including some remarks made
by former 007, Roger Moore, who later backtracked. Now speaking to Collider,
producers Barbara Broccoli, and Michael G. Wilson weight in on the rumor that
Elba could play Bond.
"I think he’d make a great Bond," said
Wilson, while Broccoli added "I always say it’s like asking a woman who’s going up the aisle on her
wedding day who her next husband is going to be. Daniel Craig is Bond, and I
don’t want to think about what happens when he goes, but I’m a huge fan of
Idris and we all are, he’s a great actor and he could do anything. Ask me when
we’re looking for a new Bond, which hopefully won’t be for a long time."
And speaking of contracts, both producers reveal that unlike
other franchises Craig didn't sign the very popular multipicture deal to play
Bond and that "We want him for as long as he wants us. That’s the simple
answer", Wilson said. Broccoli also added that the actor "has
an open-ended contract with us."
It remains to be seen how many 007 films Craig has in
him, but it's worth pointing out that the actor doesn't seem to be in a hurry
to stop playing the character as his last non-Bond feature film was The Girl
with the Dragon Tattoo back in 2011.
