I'm struggling to get excited for director Gil Kenan's Poltergeist remake.
It's not that I'm against remakes, but the trailers sold me the idea that this
film won't achieve the same level of supernatural horror that the original 1982
version directed by Tom Hooper did, and that it will be all jump-scare,
jump-scare, jump-scare like so many current horror movies are.
Nonetheless, with its outstanding cast which includes Sam Rockwell,
Rosemary DeWitt, and Jared Harris the Poltergeist remake has at the very least the
potential to be something that elevates the current low status that the remake
has been acquiring. Moreover, if the cast is not enough then perhaps news that
studio is pushing the film to be released more than two months before its
initial release date should be clue to its quality. MGM has announced that
instead of opening on July 24th, the Poltergeist remake will now hit theaters
on May 22nd.
Also starring in the remake are Saxon Sharbino, Jane Adams, Kyle Catlett,
and Kennedi Clements.
Legendary filmmaker Sam Raimi (“Spiderman,” “Evil Dead”, “The Grudge”) and
director Gil Kenan (“Monster House”) contemporize the classic tale about a
family whose suburban home is haunted by evil forces. When the terrifying
apparitions escalate their attacks and hold the youngest daughter captive, the
family must come together to rescue her before she disappears forever.
