Back in September,
while doing the press-junkets for Gone Girl, director David Fincher revealed
that believed that The Girl Who Played With Fire, the sequel to The Girl with the
Dragon Tattoo, would still be made because not only had Sony spent millions on
the rights of the books but also because they already had a script in place.
The script he said is extremely different from the book.
Great news for fans
then? Let's see, the first installment in the franchise premiered in 2011. It wasn't
a huge box-office hit, having basically doubled its production budget, however
whatever profit it did made quickly dwindled when you start adding not only the
marketing costs but also the Oscar campaign that the film had. This means that
although the studio spent millions on the rights, the monetary incentive to
continue just isn't there.
Speaking to E!
Online, Rooney Mara says that a sequel to The Girl with the dragon Tattoo
probably won't happen.
"I don't think
it's going to happen," said Mara. "I'm sad never to do it again, but
it just doesn't seem like it's in the cards."
As always never say
never, Sony and Fincher could in one month's time announce that The Girl Who
Played With Fire will being production by the end of the year, and will be
released in 2016, but honestly I don't see it.
