Today while in New Zealand promoting the local film
industry with fellow filmmaker and friend Peter Jackson, director James Cameron
revealed that the original idea to have Avatar 2 hit theaters in 2016 was
extremely ambitious so he was "forced" to push it to 2017. Cameron
decided early on to write all three scripts for the Avatar sequels in a row.
"We're
writing three simultaneously, and we've done that so that
everything tracks throughout the three films. We're not just going to do one
and then make up another one and another one after that. And
parallel with that, we're doing all the design. So we've designed all the
creatures and the environments."
Cameron then continued by saying that he expects to
have all three scripts done and ready by the end of this month.
"There's
a layer of complexity in getting the story to work as a saga across three films
that you don't get when you're making a stand-alone film," he said.
The Avatar sequels have an army of screenwriters
behind it. Besides Cameron and his team, there are also Rick Jaffa, Amanda
Silver, Josh Friedman, and Shane Salerno.
What do you think? Are you on the overrated boat in
regards to Avatar, or are excited to return to Pandora?
