Variety is reporting that Robert Downey Jr. is in final negotiations to join Chris Evans in the upcoming Captain America 3. According to their sources Marvel originally wanted Downey for a small role in Cap 3 that would have required just three weeks of work, but the actor wanted a bigger role and more screentime. This ultimately angered Marvel Entertainment Chief Ike Perlmutter who reportedly ordered all mention of Tony Stark/Iron Man to be erased from Cap 3's script.
Regardless of the situation, Kevin Feige and Downey's
representatives seem to have work something out.
Variety also says "the deal is
significant for the Marvel cinematic universe considering the plot will pit
Stark against Captain America’s alter-ego Steve Rogers, played by Chris Evans,
as they feud over the Superhero Registration Act, which forces anyone with
superhuman abilities to reveal their identities to the U.S. government and
agree to act as a police force for the authorities.

For those of you that don't know what the
hell they are talking about, it is Marvel's Civil War storyline from the
comics, which in a nutshell pits hero against hero in a life and death battle.
As always take it a grain of salt as at
this point nothing has been confirmed, and I would like to point out that Civil
War involve a ton of characters, some of which Marvel doesn't own the rights
for, though it would actually give some legitimacy to the previous rumors of
Spider-Man's rights reverting in some capacity (either full or shared custody
with Sony) back to Marvel.
Robert Downey Jr. is reportedly set to make
$40 million plus backend participation for Cap 3, with an additional percentage
added if Captain America 3 outperforms Winter Soldier.
What do you think of all this?
