It seems that yet another franchise
owned by Fox is coming under fire by Disney's biggest shareholder and Marvel
CEO Isaac Perlmutter.
Two days ago, the final nail in the
rumor that Marvel had canceled the current run of the Fantastic Four to spite
Fox's upcoming FF film was finally hit, and now it looks like their attention has
shifted to the X-Men.
Bleeding Cool has discovered an
interview with comic book writer Chris Claremont, who reveals that those at
Marvel responsible for the X-Men books are forbidden to create new characters
because they would fall under the contract Marvel has with Fox, who would be
entitled to the film rights of said new character.
"I have to say quite honestly as
I understand it now the X department is forbidden to create new characters.
Well… who owns them? All because all new characters become the film property of
Fox. There will be no X-Men merchandising for the foreseeable future because,
why promote Fox material?"
BC adds that Marvel could technically
create a new mutant character and still keep the film rights as long as it is
attributed to a Marvel Now event, and not n X-book
