While Marvel reigns supreme in
theaters, DC has found its kingdom on the small screen, and while one decided
early one to connect everything into one package, the other refuses to do so. This
wall between both companies is reflected on fans in general, ones enjoy the movie
and tv shared universe that Marvel have created while others see the potential
in having completely different universes.
Speaking to Variety Marvel's
Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. executive producer Maurissa Tancharoen says that the
shared universe is "a blessing and a curse," adding that "the fact that it is one universe means that when something occurs
on our show or a character makes a turn, it ripples through the entire
universe, which gives it much more weight. It adds the seal of approval of all
those other cinematic franchises."
On the other hand, DC chose not to pile everything
up under the shared universe flag name, and went on a different route, as DC
Comics' Chief Creative Officer Geoff Johns explains.
"We
want to give freedom to creators… so that they can take their passion [and
make] the best show, the best film, the best game without having to tie it into
other things," Johns
told the site. As for why their shows found such success, Johns says that
it all comes down to sticking to the source materials they are based on.
"Yes, it’s got to be adapted
and expanded, whether it goes from TV to comics or comics to film, but the DNA
of it is always true."
In what
side of the argument do you fall in?
