The
movie Maniac joins Hostel: Part II, The Human Centipede II (Full Sequence), The
Omen or Last Tango in Paris among others in New Zealand’s banned movie list.
The film was produced by Wood and directed by Franck Khalfoun and was received
with good reviews.
According
to THR, New Zealand’s Office of Film and Literature Legislation gave the film a
special rating, which means it can only be shown at film festivals, will not be
screened at theaters and will not be released on home video.
Ant
Simpson, who is showing the film at New Zealand International Film Festival
says that “the POV nature of the film mixed with the psychopathic behavior of
actor Elijah Wood is more than disturbing; it’s potentially dangerous in the hands
of the wrong person — that is, a non-festival-goer.”
Monster
Pictures, which is distributing the film in Australia, released a statement
saying that “Banning the film beyond festival screenings is an insult to the
intelligence of the adult population of New Zealand and does little more than
to serve as an open invitation to illegally pirate the film. We will explore
every option to have the banning revoked, but at this stage it [isn’t] looking
good,”
Well
Frodo ain’t welcomed home no more.
