Some
time ago Legendary Comics and Pacific Rim director, Guillermo del Toro
announced that they were planning to release a graphic novel series, that would
act as a prequel to the story of the movie. Yesterday at WonderCon Anaheim, the cover art, done by Alex Ross and the titled for
the first book were revealed. Pacific Rim: Tales From Year Zero as it’s called
will be the first title of the series and it will be showing the chain of
events that lead the Kaiju to invade Earth. Writing the graphic novel will
Travis Beachman (Clash of the Titans), who also wrote the Pacific Rim screenplay. Although busy with
other projects, like Pinocchio, The Incredible Hulk (TV) and Hellboy 3 (rumored)
Guillermo del Toro will be overseeing the production of the graphic novel series.
The first issue of the graphic novel will be illustrated by Yvel Guichet (DC comics, Marvel and Darkhorse), Sean
Chen (Marvel) and Pericles Junior with inking by Steve Bird (DC comics) and Mark McKenna (Marvel).
“A must-read for anyone who wants to see the movie, the graphic novel
will serve as a prequel, providing important details on the characters and the
lead up to the story arc of the movie. Written by the film's writer Travis
Beacham (Clash of the Titans), the
graphic novel is written in three distinct parts - covering the in-world
history from the first attack up to just before the movie,
Each part
tells a complete episode of that history, dipping selectively in and out of
character backstories and sometimes focusing on new characters who aren't
necessarily in the movie. The idea is to expand the universe and explore how
this war has affected not only our heroes, but the world beyond the film. That
said, Stacker Pentecost's (Idris Elba) origin will figure into all three parts,
tracking his journey to high-ranking commander.”
