Is Columbia Pictures long-gestating Spider-Man spinoff
film Venom finally taking off?
On Thursday, the studio announced it has staked
October 5, 2018 for the release of the comic book movie centered on the
Spider-Man villain and anti-hero Venom.
The date was previously occupied with the sequel to The
Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, The Girl in the Spider's Web, but that particular
film is now set for an October 19, 2018 release.
This time last year, it was reported that Sony Pictures
had procured the services of Dante Harper to write a new draft for Venom, but
since then not much has been heard of the project.
Venom has no director or actors currently attached to
it.
Created
by writer David Michelinie and artists Todd McFarlane and Mike Zeck in 1988, Venom
is an alien symbiote that requires a host to survive, in return giving him
superhuman abilities. Many writers and adventures later, Venom became an
anti-hero working for the government.
Avi Arad and Matt Tolmach are still
attached as producers, and are overseeing the project. Amy
Pascal is also producing.
