Robert
Downey Jr. has signed on to Universal Pictures' The Voyage of Doctor Dolittle
where he will play the titular doctor.
Based
on the 1920s character by Hugh Lofting, the film was written by Stephen Gaghan
("Syriana," "Gold") from an earlier draft by Tom Shepherd.
Universal
acquired the rights to the project after it garnered multiple bids from rival
studios.
The
story follows Doctor John Dolittle, a former physician who tends to animals,
claiming he can communicate with them.
Doctor
Dolittle's first big screen adaptation hit theaters in 1967 with the musical
Doctor Dolittle starring Rex Harrison based on Lofting's children novel's The
Story of Doctor Dolittle, The Voyages of Doctor Dolittle, and Doctor Dolittle's
Circus. Though not well received by critics at the time, the film was nominated
for an Oscar for Best Pictures, and won two for Best VFX and Original Song.
In
1998, Eddie Murphy starred in a new Dolittle movie, reprising his role a few
years later in the sequel.
