While both the Suicide Squad sequel and Green Lantern
Corps are still ways off (presumably), Warner Bros. is pushing them forward at
about the same pace. Back in January, the studio hired David Goyer and Justin
Rhodes to write the screenplay for Green Lantern Corps, a Lethal Weapon-type
movie in outer space centered on heroes Jon Stewart and Hal Jordan, and a
couple of days ago news came in that The Legend of Tarzan screenwriter Adam
Cozad was in talks to pen the script for the Suicide Squad sequel.
Today, things have apparently taken a step forward and
it looks like the studio might want Goyer to direct in addition to writing.
"I’m hearing David Goyer could very well wind up
directing Green Lantern Corps himself," said Jeff
Sneider on Meet the Movie Press podcast. "When you look at screenwriters
that are taking the plunge and directing these movies themselves, we saw rumors
last month that Simon Kinberg was going to direct the next X-Men movie. David Goyer is responsible for this
entire DC Universe, he wrote Batman Begins and The Dark Knight. He wrote Man of Steel, he is
the architect, if you will. He is writing and producing Green Lantern Corps, so it’s just very well, what I have
heard, one of those situations where he could be like ‘Listen, I think I may be
the best guy for the job, nobody knows this like I do.’"
Furthermore, Sneider also revealed that Goyer is in
the mix to direct Suicide Squad 2 along with The Shallows filmmaker Jaume
Collet-Serra.
Even if the studio considers him the "architect"
of the DC Extended Universe (which I doubt), Goyer's directing credits ("Blade:
Trinity," "The Invisible," "The Unborn") don't exactly
inspire confidence.
