Oscar-winning
screenwriter turned director Stephen Gaghan, who most recently worked with
Matthew McConaughey and Bryce Dallas Howard in Gold, has been brought onboard
the upcoming big screen adaptation of Ubisoft's The Division.
In the game, a devastating smallpox pandemic spreads through New York City,
and one by one, basic services fail. In only days, without food or water,
society collapses into chaos. The Division, a classified unit of self-supported
tactical agents, is activated. Leading seemingly ordinary lives among us,
Division agents are trained to operate independently in order to save society. When society falls, your mission begins.
The project is the latest
Ubisoft property to join the Ubisoft Motion Picture production line-up
following Ghost Recon, Rabbids, Watch Dogs, and Splinter Cell.
Even with the more recent
Warcraft and Assassin's Creed, movies based on video game properties are still
a thing of myth, and while it is true that no one has been able to break that
code, Gaghan
could be the one to do it. An accomplished film writer with an Oscar for his adapted
Traffic screenplay and a nomination for his original Syriana script, Gaghan
does have some experience in the video game industry, as he co-wrote the
campaign story for Call of Duty: Ghosts.
The Division will
star Jessica Chastain and Jake Gyllenhaal, whom
will be a part of the development process through their production companies,
Freckle Films and Nine Stories, respectively.
