Star Trek: Discovery Recruits James Frain In Key Role But Gets Delayed Again

Great news Star Trek fans, Spock's father Sarek is joining the first Star Trek series in over a decade, and is set to play a key role in the upcoming exploits of the crew of the Starship Discovery. Moreover, English actor James Frain has landed the role of Sarek, the first, and for now only, character from the previous Trek franchise set to appear in the new series. Frain recently played Theo Galavan, a.k.a. Azrael on Gotham, and Ferdinand Chevalier on Orphan Black.

Besides being Spock's father, Sarek is the Vulcan ambassador to the United Federation of Planets, and an astrophysicist. Memorably played by the late Mark Lenard in the original Star Trek TV series, Sarek was most recently played by Ben Cross in J.J. Abrams' 2009 reboot.

However, not all news are good ones, and EW reports that the new show has been delayed yet again. Still set to go into production next week in Toronto, Discovery will no longer premiere in May as CBS previously announced.

This is the second time CBS has had to alter their release plans for Discovery, however, unlike the first time, which was due to the exit of Brian Fuller as showrunner, it seems creative or production issues are not the reason. According to EW, there are two reasons for the delay; the main one seems to be fear that starting promoting leading actress Sonequa Martin-Green now could confuse audiences since she is still on the air as part of the ensemble of AMC's hit series The Walking Dead. The second reason appears to be that CBS is still deliberating about the choice of directors, set designs, and special effects.

When asked for a comment, CBS issued the following statement:

"Production on Star Trek: Discovery begins next week. We love the cast, the scripts and are excited about the world the producers have created.  This is an ambitious project; we will be flexible on a launch date if it’s best for the show.  We’ve said from the beginning it’s more important to do this right than to do it fast. There is also added flexibility presenting on CBS All Access, which isn’t beholden to seasonal premieres or launch windows."

Set roughly a decade before the events of the first Star Trek series, Discovery also stars Doug Jones as Lt. Saru, a Starfleet Science Officer who happens to be a new alien species in the Star Trek universe; Michelle Yeoh as Captain Georgious, the Starfleet Captain aboard the Starship Shenzhou; Anthony Rapp as Lt. Stamets, and astromycologist, i.e. a fungus expert, who is the Starfleet Science Officer aboard the Starship Discovery; Chris Obi as T'Kuvma, a Klingon leader seeking to unite the various Klingon houses; Mary Chieffo as the L'Rell, the Battle Deck Commander of a Klingon ship; and Shazad Latif, Kol, a Klingon Commanding Officer and protégé of T'Kuvma.
