It looks like Canadian
filmmaker Denis Villeneuve will be tackling yet another classic science fiction
title to the big screen once he is over with Blade Runner 2049.
According to Variety,
the Villeneuve has entered negotiations with Lionsgate to direct a new adaptation
of Frank Herbert's iconic sci-fi story Dune.
The studio picked up
the rights to the property not too long ago, and the plan is to develop not
only a new film but a new television series as well.
Legendary's
Thomas Tull, Mary Parent and Cale Boyter are serving as producer, with Brian
Herbert (Frank's son), Kim Herbert (Frank's granddaughter), and Byron Merritt
acting as executive producers.
"Set on
the desert planet Arrakis, Dune is the story of the boy Paul Atreides, who would
become the mysterious man known as Muad'Dib. He would avenge the traitorous
plot against his noble family, and would bring to fruition humankind's most
ancient and unattainable dream."
In 1984 David Lynch's Dune was released in theaters,
and even though it was very poorly received by critics, the film ultimately
found a cult following.
At this time, it is unclear if Villeneuve's talks
are for him to board the television series as well as the film.
