Disney Studios has cast a wide net to cast a Chinese actress for the lead role
in the upcoming live-action retelling of their 1998 animated comedy-drama Mulan.
According to the studio, the project is being fast-tracked to open in
theaters on November 2, 2018.
Disney also announced that Amanda Silver ("Dawn of the Planet of the
Apes") and Rick Jaffa ("Jurassic World") were brought onboard to
rewrite the spec script for Mulan by Lauren Hynek and Elizabeth Martin that the
they bought in 2015.
The plan is to craft a more nuanced and complex adaptation of the story by
combining both the 1998 movie and the original Chinese ballad of Hua Mulan, the
daughter of an older warrior who disguises herself so she could take her
father's place in the army. After twelve years of fighting, the army return and
the warriors are rewarded. Mulan declines an official post, only asking for a
swift horse to take her home. After being greeted by her family and loved ones,
Mulan dons her old clothes and meets her comrades in arms, who are shocked to
realize that she was a woman.
Following the success of Maleficent, Cinderella, and The Jungle Book,
Disney has bolstered their slate of films based on their classic animations with
such titles as Beauty and the Beast, The Jungle Book 2, Lion King, Dumbo,
Peter Pan, Winnie the Pooh, Aladdin, Tinker Bell, The Sword in the Stone, and
Fantasia's Night on Bald Mountain.
