House of Cards' Molly
Parker is joining Netflix's upcoming remake of Irwin Allen's 1965s cult classic
sci-fi television series Lost in Space.
Similar to the
original show, the new series centers on the Robinson family, who is forced to strengthen
their bonds as they are forced to deal with a strange new alien environment and
personal demons after becoming stranded light years away of their planned
destination.
Parker is set to play
the matriarch of the family Maureen Robinson opposite Toby Stephens as her
husband John Robinson, Maxwell Jenkins as Will, the youngest, and Taylor
Russell as Judy the eldest daughter.
Originally played by June
Lockhart, Maureen is a daring and smart aerospace engineer who decides to bring
the kids along for the adventure of a lifetime.
Dracula Untold screenwriters
Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless will write the new show, as well as executive
produce it along with Zack Estrin, who will serve as showrunner, Kevin Burns
and Jon Jashni, and Marc Helwig and Neil Marshall, who will direct several
episodes of the series as its producing director.
The original series
was set in the distant future of 1997, and focused on the USA's attempt to
colonize deep space. To that end, they sent a single family (Robinson) on 5
1/2-year long journey to a far away planet, but little did they knew that an enemy,
Dr. Zachary Smith, had sneaked into the spaceship with the intent of sabotaging
the mission. Ultimately, Dr. Smith's interference caused the ship to veer off
course and become lost in space.
The series is set to
premiere sometime in 2018.
