Busy filming Zack
Snyder's Justice League, two-time Oscar nominee Willem Dafoe has signed on to
voice Ryuk the Shinigami (Grim Reaper) in Adam Wingard's (V/H/S) upcoming
live-action adaptation of Death Note for Netflix.
Based on Tsugumi Ohba and Takeshi Obata horror manga of the same name, the film centers
on a student named Light Turner (Nat Wolff), who discovers a supernatural
notebook (Death Note) that gives him the ability to kill anyone he chooses
simply by writing that person's name on it. When Light decides to take upon
himself to eradicate the World from evil, a reclusive police officer known only
as L appears and a game of cat-and-mouse ensues.
In the manga series, bored with his life on the Shinigami realm and hoping to amuse himself, Ryuk drops a fellow Grim Reaper's Death Note in the
human realm just to see what happens. From then on, Ryuk starts to follow Light to see how he uses the book. The
Death Note is a book that allows Grim Reapers to steal the life expectancy of
humans in order to extend their own.
Set to premiere sometime
in 2017, Death Note also stars Margaret Qualley as Mia Stutton, Keith Stanfield
as L, Michael Shamus Wiles as Police Captain Russel, and Shea Whigham as Light's
father and Internal Affairs Officer James Turner.
