Given his own personal history, George Takei's disapproval
of Mr. Sulu's gender (re-)orientation in Star Trek Beyond came as a surprise to
many, including Simon Pegg who has already expressed his opinion on the matter,
and Zachary Quinto who is now giving his own.
"As a member of the LGBT community myself, I was
disappointed by the fact that George was disappointed," Quinto told Pedestrian.TV in response to Takei's comments about Star
Trek Beyond.
Speaking to THR awhile back Takei, who played the character
between 1966 and 1991 in both TV and film, stated that although he is very much
in favor of the inclusion of a gay character in Star Trek, he feels that Mr.
Sulu shouldn't be him, adding that it is both a twisting of Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry's
original vision, and that it makes it look like the character he played for so long was "suddenly being revealed as being closeted."
"I get it that he's has had his own personal
journey and has his own personal relationship with this character but, you
know, as we established in the first Star Trek film in 2009, we've created an
alternate universe," Quinto said. "My hope is that eventually George
can be strengthened by the enormously positive response from especially young
people who are heartened by and inspired by this really tasteful and beautiful
portrayal of something that I think is gaining acceptance and inclusion in our
societies across the world, and should be."
Opening in theaters on July 22, Star Trek Beyond stars
the late Anton Yelchin, Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, John Cho, Idris Elba, Zoe
Saldana, Sofia Boutella, Karl Urban, Deep Roy, Shohreh Aghdashloo, and Joe
Taslim.
