With The Conjuring 2 opening
in number one both domestically and in several other countries around the
World, New Line has decided to spinoff the film's villain into its own movie.
James Wan, who
directed both Conjuring films, will reunite with the franchise producer Peter
Safran to produce the aptly titled The Nun with David Leslie Johnson, who
co-wrote the latest installment in the supernatural thriller franchise returning
to write the script.
The Nun will be the franchise's
second spinoff following the poorly received but commercially successful Annabelle
in 2014.
In a bit of film
trivia, the nun character wasn't part of Wan's first plan or cut of the film,
in fact she was added merely three months before the film was set to premiere
on June 10. Apparently, the filmmaker had an epiphany and decided to change the
original villain, a horned demon to a nun. The studio didn't shy away from Wan's vision
and agreed to the last minute switch, which meant additional reshoots and some
amount of digital alterations.
