Barkhad Abdi Joins Blade Runner Sequel

Academy Award nominee Barkhad Abdi is joining the cast of Denis Villeneuve's yet untitled sequel to Ridley Scott's 1982 masterpiece Blade Runner in an unknown role.

The Captain Phillips co-star joins Harrison Ford, Ryan Gosling, Ana de Armas, Dave Bautista, Robin Wright, Sylvia Hoeks, and Carla Juri.

Taking place several decades after Scott's iconic sci-fi film with Ford reprising his role as Rick Deckard, the sequel was written by Hampton Fancher and Michael Green, and succeeds the initial story by Fancher and David Peoples based on Philip K. Dick's novel Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep. Story details are not being revealed.

Frank Giustra and Tim Gamble of Thunderbird Films will serve as executive producers alongside Scott and Bill Carraro.

Acclaimed cinematographer Roger Deakins will reteam with Villeneuve after having previously collaborated with the director on Prisoners, and Sicario.

Blade Runner 2 will begin filming this July for an October 6, 2017 release.
