Academy Award nominee
Barkhad Abdi is joining the cast of Denis Villeneuve's yet untitled sequel to
Ridley Scott's 1982 masterpiece Blade Runner in an unknown role.
The Captain Phillips
co-star joins Harrison Ford, Ryan Gosling, Ana de Armas, Dave Bautista, Robin
Wright, Sylvia Hoeks, and Carla Juri.
Taking place several decades
after Scott's iconic sci-fi film with Ford reprising his role as Rick Deckard,
the sequel was written by Hampton Fancher and Michael
Green, and succeeds the initial story by Fancher and David Peoples based on
Philip K. Dick's novel Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep. Story
details are not being revealed.
Frank Giustra and Tim Gamble
of Thunderbird Films will serve as executive producers alongside Scott and Bill
Carraro.
Acclaimed cinematographer Roger Deakins will
reteam with Villeneuve after having previously collaborated with the director on Prisoners, and
Sicario.
Blade Runner 2 will begin
filming this July for an October 6, 2017 release.
