Late last week, Friday,
May 20, Marvel Studios surprised us all with an official casting announcement
for Taika Waititi first foray into superhero territory, Thor: Ragnarok. The
announcement officially confirmed the castings of Cate Blanchett and Tessa
Thompson as Hela and Valkyrie, respectively, but also confirmed the additions
of Jeff Goldblum and Karl Urban to the cast.
IGN recently
caught up with Urban after a press event for Star Trek Beyond, and asked the
actor what reasons led him to join the project and play the mighty and villainous
Skurge, aka The Executioner.
"I
read a fantastic script that was action-packed and full of great characters.
When I heard who was involved -- and the cast list dropped yesterday -- and
[saw] the opportunity to work with [director] Taika Waititi, who I think is one
of the most brilliant directors coming through, I made the decision it was
something that I wanted to be a part of. And the character is fantastic. He's
got a great arc to him. Obviously, I can't say too much about it, but I'm really
thrilled to be a part of the Marvel universe and to be working on Thor: Ragnarok."
Also starring Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Tom
Hiddleston as Loki, Idris Elba as Heimdall, Sir. Anthony Hopkins as Odin, and Mark
Ruffalo as Bruce Banner, a.k.a. The Hulk, Thor: Ragnarok opens in theaters on
November 3, 2017.
