Although not exactly a surprise, today at CinemaCon,
Warner Bros. officially announced that they are indeed developing a Batman
standalone movie with Ben Affleck.
The "news" came during the studio panel at
the event by Warner Bros. CEO and Chairman Kevin Tsujihara, who after revealing
that there are ten DC movies currently in the pipeline for the next five years
and beyond, touted that they are "excited to be working with Ben Affleck
on a standalone Batman film."
While at first glance these are great news, the
somewhat vague comment by Tsujihara leaves plenty of room for speculation. Did
the CEO meant to confirm that Affleck will be directing the film in addition to
starring in it, or that the actor is just starring in it?
Popular believe (and likely the correct one), is that
Affleck will pile duties and direct the film besides starring in it, and help
developing the script, which he has been doing for some time now with DC Comics
CCO Geoff Johns. However, we know (because he said so himself) that Affleck
likes to focus on one movie at the time, and with his follow-up to Argo, Live
by Night only coming to the big screen on October 2017 that means that a solo
Batman is likely to hit theaters on October 5, 2018 or November 1, 2019. Warner
has a couple of unknown DC movies scheduled to premiere on those dates, so
Batman could be one of them.
