UPDATE:
It appears that earlier reports
claiming that Christopher McQuarrie was set to direct Edge of Tomorrow 2 were
wrong. The director himself has taken to twitter to clarify the situation and
say that that there is no Edge of
Tomorrow 2 without Doug Liman, who directed the first film.
Correction: I am NOT directing The sequel to Edge of Tomorrow. Doug Liman is. I will be involved but there's no Edge without Doug.— ChristopherMcQuarrie (@chrismcquarrie) 8 de abril de 2016
Having said that congratulations to @annawaterhouse and @JoeShrapnel. First The Gray Man and now Edge II. Richly deserved.— ChristopherMcQuarrie (@chrismcquarrie) 8 de abril de 2016
Screenwriters Joe Shrapnel and Anna Waterhouse have
signed on to write the sequel to Edge of Tomorrow, the 2014 sci-fi film
directed by Doug Liman starring Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt.
The original film was based on a novel by Japanese author
Hiroshi Sakurazaka, Edge of Tomorrow takes place in a near future in which an
alien race has hit the Earth in an unrelenting assault, unbeatable by any
military unit in the world. Lt. Col. Bill Cage (Cruise) is
an officer who has never seen a day of combat when he is unceremoniously
dropped into what amounts to a suicide mission. Killed within minutes, Cage now
finds himself inexplicably thrown into a time loop—forcing him to live out the
same brutal combat repeatedly, fighting and dying again…and again. But with each battle, Cage becomes able to engage the
adversaries with increasing skill, alongside Special Forces warrior Rita
Vrataski (Blunt). And, as Cage and Rita take the fight to the aliens, each
repeated encounter gets them one step closer to defeating the enemy.
The writing duo is in much demand
these days. After the Jesse Owens biopic Race, Shrapnel and Waterhouse have rewritten the adaptation
of Mark Greaney's novel The Gray Man for Christopher McQuarrie and Charlize
Theron. They have also adapted Circle Of Treason, a book by CIA agents Sandy
Grimes and Jeanne Vertefeuille about their pursuit of fellow CIA agent and
traitor Aldrich Ames. Finally, they have also adapted Rhidian Brook’s The Aftermath for Ridley Scott’s Scott
Free and BBC Films.
Edge of Tomorrow wrapped things up efficiently
for Cruise and Blunt's characters, so I wonder what the writers will come up to find way to bring them back for another
time-looping adventure.
According to Deadline, Christopher McQuarrie,
who co-wrote the screenplay for the first movie, is attached to direct the
sequel.
