In a surprising twist
of fate, it looks like Michael Keaton could be returning to the superhero universe,
this time as a villain in Spider-Man: Homecoming.
Sources close to the
production tell Variety that the actor is in early negotiations to play a (not
the) villain in the Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures upcoming co-production of
Spider-Man starring Tom Holland in the lead role.
Keaton famously
played Batman in Tim Burton's 1989 and 1992 take on the caped crusader, as well
as an actor famous for playing a superhero in Alejandro González Iñárritu's 2014
Oscar winning skewering drama, Birdman.
Directed by Jon Watts
("Cop Car") from a script by John Francis Daley and Jonathan
Goldstein, Spider-Man: Homecoming also stars Marisa Tomei as Aunt May, and Zendaya
in an undisclosed role.
Neither Marvel nor
Sony commented on the possible casting, but it would be funny if Keaton were in
negotiations to play Vulture, a flying Spider-Man villain recently reported to be in the film.
Spider-Man:
Homecoming opens in theaters on July 7, 2017.
