After losing director Robert Schwentke to exhaustion
and homesickness, Lionsgate and Summit Entertainment have narrowed down the
list of possible replacements with who to end the Divergent franchise to one
name.
According to The Hollywood Reporter,
The Age of Adaline director Lee Toland Krieger is in negotiations to helm The
Divergent Series: Ascendant, the last installment in the semi-popular Y.A.
franchise based on a series of novels written by Veronica Roth.
Although it never reached the heights
of Lionsgate's other Y.A. franchise, The Hunger
Games, the
Divergent movies have grossed over $586 million worldwide.
Krieger is the third director attached
to the franchise following Neil Burger (The Illusionist), who kicked things off
with Divergent, and Schwentke,
who directed the next two, Insurgent and the upcoming Allegiant. Schwentke was also set to direct the final entry but had to take a break after directing the two
movies back-to-back.
The Divergent Series franchise stars
Shailene Woodley, Theo James,
Miles Teller, Ansel Elgort, Naomi Watts, Zoe Kravitz, and Jeff Daniels.
Allegiant opens in theaters on March 18, and Ascendant on June 9, 2017.
