In addition to the
actual film, full documentary, and other tidbits of cool trivia that will put a
smile on Star Wars fans faces, the home release of J.J. Abrams The Force Awakens
will also include seven scenes that were left on the cutting room table.
"There
are so many things that end up getting cut because of the greater good, because
of the rhythm of the sequence or the need to get on with it, a sense of
redundancy," Abrams told EW. "You don’t know any of
these things when you’re making the movie, of course. It was sometimes after
months of working on something that you realize finally — you just
don’t need it."
In
this scene set early in the film, after having lost a First Order
"comrade" (helmet with blood), but before rounding up the villagers, John
Boyega's FN-2187 character points his weapon to a woman in the shadows of a
small building, and…well you have to see it to find out.
For those craving
more Han Solo swagger, this scene will definitely scratch that itch. In this
scene set in the basement of Maz Kanata's (Lupita
Nyong'o) castle, Han, Chewie, and Finn come face-to-face with a squad of
stormtroopers, and everyone's favorite smuggler talks his way out of trouble.
The deleted
scene will only be available with the digital release, but each Blu-ray combo
pack includes a free download, so you can get it that way.
In this moment of The
Force Awakens, Kylo Ren leads a squad of First Order stormtroopers to the
Millennium Falcon, which has crashed on the surface of Starkiller Base. Confronted
with the iconic starship, Ren begins to have bittersweet memories.
"You
never go into a day of shooting and say, 'This is probably going to be on the
cutting room floor,'" says Abrams, seen here in a newly released
behind-the-scenes shot with Harrison Ford. "Every day feels as essential
as anything else. It’s always annoying to realize that you wasted anyone’s
time on shooting something that wasn’t necessary."
In this deleted scene
from the movie, of which the image above is not representative of, Carrie
Fisher's General Leia would have been introduced much earlier in the film, and
it would have seen her talking about the First Order's massacre on Jakku. The
sequence would have also introduced Emun Elliot (Marillion on Game of Thrones)
as communications officer Major Brance, who receives a distress signal from
BB-8 informing the Resistance of the attack.
In this deleted sequence (image not representative) titled X-Wings Prepare for Lightspeed, hotshot Resistance fighter pilot Poe
Dameron (Oscar Isaac) leads a large squadron on an assault to Starkiller Base.
This scene was set in space and not within the atmosphere of the planet.
Injured from his lightsaber
fight with Kylo Renn, this deleted scene sees Rey watching over Finn while at
the Resistance base, while getting an update on his condition from Dr. Kalonia
(Harriet Walton from Downton Abbey).
In this last sequence, for
which there is no image, Finn and Rey hijack a First Order snowspeeder and desperately
try to escape the bowls of Starkiller Base. This moment would have gap the hole
between being inside the hellish super weapon and outside before fighting Kylo
Ren.
The Digital HD release of Star
Wars: The Force Awakens will become available on April 1, while Blu-ray/DVD
will be ready to purchase on April 5.
