New Line has given go-ahead to a San
Andreas sequel, with Neil Widener and Gavin James set to write the script. Last
year, the up-and-coming screenwriters sold Verona, a reimagining of Williams
Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet to Sony Pictures, and more recently the duo
penned Battle for Alcatraz, a true-story drama being developed by Paramount.
Dwayne Johnson is set to reprise his role from the
first movie as is Carla Gugino, Paul Giamatti, and Alexandra Daddario.
In the 2015 disaster movie Johnson played a search and rescue helicopter pilot, who when the infamous San Andreas
Fault finally gives, and triggers a magnitude 9 earthquake in California, must reconnect
with his estranged wife (Gugino) and make their way together from Los Angeles to San Francisco to save
their only daughter (Daddario).
Details about the sequel are being kept under wraps, but San Andreas 2 will
go global and focus on the infamous Ring of Fire, a zone in the Pacific Ocean
that scientist estimate is the local for up to 90 percent of the world's
earthquakes due to its many fault lines and volcanoes.
San Andreas grossed nearly $500 million worldwide.
