Pacific
Rim 2 is finally moving forward. The production status of sequel has been
something some have debated ever since a quarrel between studios threw the
property into the shelf with Universal eventually removing the picture from
their 2017 release schedule. Even so, Guillermo del Toro has always been
positive that it would eventually be made.
Today,
Deadline reports that Pacific Rim 2 is indeed moving forward, just not with del
Toro attached as director. The visionary filmmaker has been replaced with
Spartacus creator and former Daredevil showrunner Steven S. DeKnight.
DeKnight
will direct the sequel from a script written by Jon Spaihts (Doctor Strange),
and while details are at this point scarce, del Toro revealed not too long ago
that the sequel would take place years after the first one with all those that
survived the first film returning.
At
the moment it's unclear if Charlie Hunnam, Charlie Day, Rinku Kikuchi, and
others have been approached to reprise their roles.
