Because nostalgia is
the next best thing to originality, NBC has decided to dust off Cruel
Intentions and give it some new life on the small screen.
In the critically
panned but financially successful 1999 movie, Kathryn (Sarah Michelle Gellar) and Sebastian (Ryan Philippe), two wealthy and
manipulative teenage stepsiblings wager whether he can seduce the virginal
Annette Hargrove (Reese Witherspoon), the daughter of the
school's new headmaster. If he can Kathryn must sleep with him, if he can't he
must forfeit his priceless 1956 Jaguar to Kathryn and suffer the shame of
defeat. However, the heart takes over and Sebastian falls in love with Annette.
Some contrive things happen, and Sebastian ends up saving Annette's life at the
cost of his own. In the end, Sebastian's journal detailing the sordid bet and Kathryn's
conniving plans is turned into a book called… Cruel Intentions.
In the movie (spoilers),
Sebastian is never seen deflowering Annette, but it seems that for
the pilot, which picks up 15 years after the original movie, he has.
Cruel Intentions
picks up over 15 years after the hit movie left off. It follows the beautiful
and cunning Kathryn Merteuil as she vies for control of Valmont International
as well as the soul of Bash Casey, the son of her brother, who was the late
Sebastian Valmont, and Annette Hargrove. Upon discovering his late father’s
legacy in a hidden journal, Bash is introduced to a world of sex, money, power
and corruption he never could have imagined.
It's unclear if Sarah
Michelle Gellar, Reese Witherspoon, or any of original cast, which also included
Selma Blair, Joshua Jackson, or Eric Mabius, will return.
