Director James
Mangold has joined Disney's Captain Nemo, which he will direct once he is
finished with the last Wolverine standalone movie starring Hugh Jackman.
Captain Nemo is an
origin story based on Jules Verne's 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea that will show
how the brilliant inventor created his iconic submarine the Nautilus.
Writer and director Sebastian
Gutierrez (Elektra
Lux, Hotel Noir) is currently working on the latest draft of the script.
David Fincher was at one point
attached to direct Captain Nemo from a draft by his Seven
scribe Andrew Kevin Walker, but budget, story, and casting disagreements with Disney forced
him to depart, and he moved on to direct Gone Girl instead.
Captain Nemo isn't
the only project based on Verne's classic story that is currently being
developed. Bryan Singer recently announced that he will direct a version of 20,000
Leagues Under The Sea for Fox once he premieres X-Men: Apocalypse. Production
on Singer's underwater adventure will begin later this year.
