Downton Abbey star Dan
Stevens has been cast as David Heller, the protagonist in FX's upcoming X-Men
spinoff series, Legion.
In the series, David
is diagnosed as schizophrenic at a young age, and becomes a haunted man trying
to find his way back to sanity. Fortunately, just at the moment he is about to
give up, he meets the girl of his dreams.
Also joining the show
are Aubrey Plaza (Parks and Recreation, Safety Not Guaranteed) and Jean Smart (24,
Fargo, Harry's Law).
Plaza is set to play
Lenny, "David’s friend, who
despite a life of drugs and alcohol abuse, knows that any day now her life is
gonna turn around, which gives Lenny the likeable energy of the impossible
optimist despite her rough demeanor," while Smart will play a "nurturing, demanding
therapist with a sharp mind and unconventional methods" named Melanie.
The trio of actors
join the previously cast Rachel Keller, who is playing a self-sufficient and street smart woman named
Syd, who uses her sharp and prickly demeanor to protect her soft core, because
even though it makes her a sucker and puts her at risk, she still believes in
happily ever after.
Fargo's Noah Hawley wrote the pilot and serves as an executive producer
alongside Simon Kinberg, who wants Legion to be the Breaking Bad of superhero stories,
Bryan Singer, Lauren Shuler Donner, Marvel's Jim Chory, and Fargo's EP John
Cameron.
Legion begins production
in March.
