Keeping with tradition, the upcoming World War Z
sequel is also having behind-the-scenes problems. The first movie, directed by
Marc Forster (Monster's Ball), famously went into massive reshoots after the
first cut of the movie was deemed "atrocious" by Brad Pitt himself,
the budget spiraled way past its initial $150 million, and even Robert
Richardson the cinematographer asked if Paramount could remove his name from
the credits.
Now according to Deadline, Juan Antonio Bayona (The
Orphanage, The Impossible) has left the movie due to scheduling conflicts. Apparently
the director, who was hired back in 2013 after the first movie had came out, has
commitments to A Monster Calls, his most recent movie, which stars Felicity
Jones, Liam Neeson, Sigourney Weaver, Toby Kebbell, and Geraldine Chaplin.
"Bayona
is no longer able to make World
War Z 2 this
year, and it is our ambition to do so," reads a statement by Paramount and
Brad Pitt's Plan B. "He is a wonderful director and we hope to work with
him soon."
Written
by Steven Knight (Locke), and rewritten by Dennis Kelly (Utopia), World War Z 2
will see Brad Pitt reprising his role as former United Nations investigator Gerry
Lane.
Production
is expected to begin this summer for a June 9, 2017 release.
