Despite the all the
criticism, Michael Bay stands as one of the most commercially successful movie
directors in the world, fourth to be precise (and second in the US), and a good
portion of that success stems from the staggering amount of projects he
produces, which doubles those he directs.
Recently, amid an in-depth
profile about his life, work, and most recent project, the Benghazi drama 13
Hours, the tireless producer turned to his computer to take care of some business
pertaining to the upcoming Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles sequel, TMNT: Out of
the Shadows, which he is producing.
On the screen was ILM's
Pablo Helman (Star Wars prequels), the visual-effects supervisor for the
upcoming turtles sequel, who shows Bay the latest version of Krang, a villainous
disembodied brain inside a giant robot.
"So we've
eliminated the tentacles," Helman explains. "Is it too
monster-ish?"
"He could have
some tentacles," says Bay. "I just don't want them coming out of the
side. He looks like a stupid
octopus."
Bay also touched, briefly,
on the status of the next Transformers movie, which he was unsure about returning,
but now confirms he will indeed direct.
"I'm doing
Transformers ... 5, is it?" Bay said, seemingly losing count at where the
Transformers movies are now. "I've taken on a
lot of work."
And he is not
kidding. Besides the above-mentioned projects, Bay is also producing or
executive producing the Transformers spinoff, the Jack Ryan TV series, the
third Purge movie, Ouija 2, Bad Boys 4, a reality show, and much more, and yet…
"Transformers, I
still have a great time. It's fun to do a movie that 100 million people will
see. But this is the last one. I have to pass the reins to someone
else."
I remind Bay that he said the
same thing before each of the last two Transformers movies.
"I know," he says. "J.J. [Abrams] told me, 'You're the only guy
that could do this.' But it's time to move on. One more."
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles:
Out of the Shadows opens in theaters on June 3, 2016.
