In some surprising
news, yesterday at the 2016 TCA Winter Press Tour, FX President John Landgraf
announced that they will be taking a cue out of DC's unconnected film and TV universes,
with their upcoming X-Men spinoff series, Legion.
"It’s not in the
continuity of those films, in the sense that the current X-Men films take place
in a universe where everybody on planet earth is aware of the existence of
mutants. The series Legion takes
place takes place in a parallel universe in which the U.S. Government is in the
early days of being aware that something called mutants exist, but the public
does not. I wouldn’t foresee characters moving back and forth because they
really are parallel universes."
If we've learned
anything from DC's movie and TV universes is that the same character can appear
can exist in different platforms and be played by completely different actors, case
in point The CW's The Flash starring Grant Gustin in the titular role, and the
upcoming movie version of the character starring Ezra Miller.
So can we expect
something similar in Legion? Probably not says Landgraf.
"It's still in process but I think at the moment
they're all new characters…But I'm 100% sure that'll be the case by the time it
airs."
As for the time frame of the show, Landgraf
revealed, “It might be a few years in the past,” while also saying it will be a
10-episode season, should it get the greenlight, like Hawley’s Fargo seasons.
Legion has yet to
receive an official series order, but that seems like a mere formality at this
point. Legion is expected to premiere later this year.
