With production set to begin in the coming
week's we now know what role martial-arts expert Jet Li will play in the
upcoming xXx sequel Vin Diesel managed to resuscitate, xXx: The Return of Xander
Cage.
According to The Hollywood Reporter,
Li will play the leader of a team that will face off against Diesel's Xander
Cage own team, which will be a first for the franchise since the main character
has always acted as a lone extreme wolf. Diesel's team includes a "huntress"
who has some history with Cage played by Deepika Padukone (Chennai Express), a
sniper played by Ruby Rose (Orange is the New Black), a "witty and sarcastic
techie" played by Nina Dobrev (Vampire Diaries), and Samuel L. Jackson as
NSA's Augustus Gibbons.
Giving Diesel some team support is
clearly an attempt to try to mimic the Fast & Furious in which Diesel also
stars, as well as perhaps complement his short range by surrounding him with people
that bring other sensibilities to the table.
It's unclear if Li and his team will
be the main antagonists of the movie at this point.
THR also reveals that there were
other actors were in talks to join the movie, including Jennifer Lopez who
ended up passing either because both parties couldn't reach a deal or because
of schedule. Lopez is currently starring in NBC's crime drama Shades of Blue,
and is lending her voice to the next Ice Age installment, Ice Age: Collision
Course.
