Jesse Eisenberg Almost Played A Different Character In Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice

This March, DC Comics fans will be introduced to a new take on many familiar characters. Wonder Woman will, hopefully, no longer spin, Batman will have a less gravelly voice, and Lex Luthor will have, unlike his previous incarnations, long lush hair.

Gal Gadot, Ben Affleck, and Jesse Eisenberg have been tasked with the difficult job of bringing these iconic characters to the big screen, but while Gadot and Affleck's cast seem to have been somewhat pre-destined, Eisenberg's not so much. In fact, Zack Snyder reveals in a recent interview to the L.A. Times that he initially offered a different role to Eisenberg, though he doesn't say which.

"Let’s call it a secret, but nevertheless it was the exact opposite of Lex Luthor," Snyder said, taking a break on the phone from drawing "Justice League" Aquaman in his storyboards. After Eisenberg declined, Snyder went back and offered him something “cooler,” the role of Luthor.

It's difficult to ascertain what character Snyder is talking about since we don't exactly know the full list of characters in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and their place in the film. It's even possible that the role didn't survive the script re-writes.

One of the many things some fans have been having some qualms over is Lex's hair, which Eisenberg not only assures will go way, but in a big and important scene.

"When you see the movie, you’ll see. It’s the greatest scene that I’ve ever gotten to take part in — it accounts for the change in hair."

In previous films, Lex Luthor was a villain because of we already knew he was one. For Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice however, Eisenberg says that the character's backstory will be fleshed out, which in turn will give his motivations a bigger dramatic heft.

"The character has a core of reality. [Luthor] has a back story that’s tragic and an emotional inner life that’s authentic. That’s in the movie. It was my interest in playing the character with a real emotional core, and this writer, Chris Terrio‘s interest in creating a character that seemed viable in reality."

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice hits theaters on March 25.
