Jennifer Lawrence, who was recently nominated for her
fourth Academy Award for playing Joy in David O'Russell's movie of the same name,
is producing and starring in another movie based on a real-life woman, who had
a very eventful life.
The actress is set to play Marita Lorenz in Marita, a
pitch Sony Pictures picked up from American Hustle's co-writer Eric Warren
Singer. Matt Tolmach, Andre Rouleau, and Scott Mednick are also producing
alongside Lawrence.
The movie will center on Lorenz and how in
1959, at the age of 19 she met Fidel Castro and began an affair with the Cuban
leader. After becoming pregnant and having an abortion, Lorenz traded Cuba for
the U.S., where she was recruited by the CIA for an assassination mission. In
1960, she returned to Cuba to carry out the mission but, according to lore,
yielded to love.
Lorenz
also had an affair with a Venezuelan dictator, claimed to have been involved in
the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, and spied on diplomats for the
FBI in the 1970s.
Lawrence,
who will next be seen in X-Men: Apocalypse, is also attached to star in a yet
untitled Darren Aronofsky movie also starring Javier Bardem for Paramount; a
drama about a female war photographer set to be directed by Steven Spielberg;
and she is co-writing and will star in a project with Amy Schumer.
