I Am Legend screenwriter Mark Protosevich has
announced that he will be rewriting the script for the upcoming Flash Gordon movie
currently being developed over at 20th Century Fox, with Matthew Vaughn
attached to direct.
"I can't wait to get started and if you're
curious about the take? I'm not saying a word," Protosevich wrote on his
Facebook page. "All I'll say is this - it will be nothing like any version
of Flash Gordon you've seen."
Protosevich will be working of an earlier script
penned by John D. Payne and Patrick McKay, which in turn was based on an
outline written by writer/director George Nolfi (The Adjustment Bureau).
Payne and McKay just departed another 20th Century Fox
project. The writing duo were set to write the script for the X-Men spinoff TV series
Hellfire, but left followed the exit of co-creators Evan Katz and Manny Coto.
Protosevich's other credits include the visually
stunning The Cell, the adaptation of Paul Gallico's Poseidon, Spike Lee's
Oldboy, and the story for Marvel's Thor, which coincidently Vaughn and his
usual creative partner Jane Goldman were at one point almost set to direct.
Created in 1934 by Alex Raymond, Flash Gordon follows the titular hero's
adventures on the planet Mongo, where alongside Dale Arden and the mad
scientist Dr. Hans Zarkov, he fights the tyrant Ming the Merciless.
