While the last Fast &
Furious movie would be a perfect last installment in the popular high-speed franchise
for obvious reasons, the fact that it grossed over $1.5 billion worldwide "forced"
Universal Pictures to move ahead with the follow-up, which now we know will be
directed by Straight Outta Compton director, F. Gary Grey.
Speaking to Collider, Grey was
unsurprisingly tight-lipped about the plot for the sequel but did said that he
intends to give fans of the franchise something new.
"I’m probably
not at liberty to go too far into detail. All I have to say is I’m extremely
excited about the direction we’re going in, and we’re really pushing to make
sure the audience feels like it’s not more of the same. They feel like it’s
fresh, they feel like the characters they’ve come to know and love are there,
but this is gonna be different, and that’s probably the most I can give you
right now."
The filmmaker also spoke
about the recent report, which stated that he had gone on a scouting trip to
Cuba.
"I can say that
we’ve flown around the world to scout, and it’s pretty profound some of the
things that we’ve uncovered and how it’s gonna serve our story."
Furious 8 rolls out on April 14, 2017.
