Paramount Pictures and Hasbro have been taking cooking
lessons as they have just chucked five different properties into the same pot
with the hope that a shared cinematic universe will come out of it.
Paramount has inked a new deal with the toy maker that
further extends their successful relationship with an interconnected universe
that will include characters from G.I. Joe, Micronauts, Visionairies: Knights
of the Magical Light, ROM, and M.A.S.K. (Mobile Armored Strike Kommand).
Just like in their previous collaboration,
Transformers, Paramount and Hasbro are planning to form a writers' room that
will somehow create a cohesive storyline that will weave all these properties
together.
"Paramount and Hasbro have had a longstanding
relationship and we're proud of the success we've enjoyed on the Transformers and G.I.
Joe franchises,"
Brad Grey, Paramount chairman and CEO, said in announcing the deal. "We're
excited to grow our agreement and make even more movies based upon these
popular and powerful Hasbro characters and their worlds."
"Hasbro and
Allspark Pictures put storytelling at the center of everything that we do.
These brands are filled with memorable stories and vivid characters, and this
universe creates a framework for how they will become interconnected," added
Brian Goldner, Hasbro's President and CEO. "Extending our partnership with
Paramount allows us to continue our long-term strategy and overall vision to build
dynamic worlds for all of our brands, and we are thrilled to collaborate with
them as we develop these properties."
The Transformers movie franchise has grossed more than
$3.8 billion worldwide since it began in 2007, while G.I. Joe only managed a
fraction of that with a combined total of $675 million.
Will it work, or is this a recipe for disaster?
