It sounds like the
director who was once unsure if wanted to direct Star Wars: The Force Awakens
in the first place, now expresses regrets about not continuing attached to the
franchise in a more creative way.
"He read it and
said something he never, ever says. He said: ‘It’s so good, I wish I were
making it,’" recounts actor Greg Grunberg, who plays Resistance fighter pilot
Snap Wexley in the new film, of Abrams remarks to the Episode VIII script.
"He may have
said something one time on ‘Lost,’ with Damon [Lindelof, the co-creator],"
Grunberg adds, "but I never hear him express regret like that."
Abrams reaction to
the quality of the script and desire to continue could be an emotional response
to the high he is probably feeling due to the critical and commercial success of The Force Awakens, but it also serves as an endorsement to Rian
Johnson (Looper) who has inherited the franchise, and is currently filming
Episode VIII, which he also wrote.
But Abrams isn't leaving
the franchise altogether. The filmmaker shared some cuts of The Force Awakens
with Johnson to help make the transition between films as seamless as possible,
and he is credited as an executive producer on the film.
The yet untitled Star
Wars: Episode VIII hits theaters on 26 May, 2017.
