Looking into their history Marvel Studios is about be fifty-fifty
when it comes to holding on to directors. Jon Favreau, Joss Whedon, the Russo
Brothers, and James Gunn all stayed for the sequels, while Louis Leterrier, Kenneth
Branagh, Joe Johnston, Shane Black, and Alan Taylor never returned.
Peyton Reed is about to join those that have returned,
and according to the 51-year-old director, negotiations between him and Marvel
are going smoothly and are closer to the end.
"We’re [still] in
negotiations, but I think it’s looking pretty good," the filmmaker said to
Yahoo! Movies.
It's not unexpected that Marvel
would want Reed to return, especially after stepping in at the last moment to
replace Edgar Wright, and together with Paul Rudd and Adam McKay taking what
many assumed would be a failure to not only mostly positive reviews but also
box-office gold.
Taking over Wright on such short notice prevented
Reed from fully making Ant-Man his own, so for him having that opportunity is
one of the appealing things about returning and continue to build that world.
"I think one of the appealing
things about coming back for a sequel is to be able to build it from the ground
up this time," Reed said. "Also, [there’s] stuff that we clearly set
up in the first movie that we want to pay off and have fun with in the second
movie. Since we know [the characters’] origins, we can go in some weird, unique
and different territory."
Ant-Man 2 won't be the first
Marvel movie to have a female superhero share most of the screen time with the titular
lead hero. Captain America: The Winter Soldier gave Black Widow the opportunity
to have a more substantial role in the marvel Cinematic Universe, but the movie wasn't titled Captain American
& Black Widow: The Winter Soldier like Ant-Man and the Wasp is.
"It just happened to be
organic for the characters of Ant-Man and Wasp, [so] it worked," he said. "Her
last line in the movie — ‘It’s about damn time’ — [is] very much about her
specific character and arc in that movie, but it is absolutely about a larger
thing. It’s about damn time: We’re going to have a fully realized, very very complicated hero in the next movie who
happens to be a woman."
The next time we will see Scott
Lang (Paul Rudd) will be in Joe and Anthony Russo's Captain America: Civil War,
which promises to shatter allegiances and friendships.
Ant-Man and the Wasp opens on July 6, 2018.
