Writer/director Bong Joon-ho has just secure the
finance and creative liberty to produce his second English spoken movie, Okja,
which at $50 million will be one of South Korea's biggest production to date,
and $8 million bigger than his first film predominantly starring western
actors, Snowpiercer.
Brad Pitt's production company Plan B Pictures will
co-produce the project alongside Netflix, who is planning to expand its
streaming services to South Korea next year.
"I am looking forward to bringing in a mix of
bold energy that has been unique to Plan B," said Joon-ho of the
production company, which has helped get World War Z and 12 Years a Slave of
the ground.
Regarding Netflix, the director said that it is "really
is a fantastic opportunity for me as a filmmaker. For Okja, I needed a
bigger budget than I had for Snowpiercer and also complete creative
freedom. Netflix offered me the two conditions that are difficult to have in
hand simultaneously."
Joon-ho's desire for creative freedom is to be
expected, especially after all the trouble he had with The Weinstein Company
when it came time for Snowpiercer's American release.
Snowpiercer is one of those movie that I constantly re-watch,
so can't wait to see what the filmmaker will do with a bigger budget, more freedom,
and the outstanding cast that he has gathered so far, which include Tilda
Swinton, who reunited with the director after Snowpiercer, Jake Gyllenhaal,
Paul Dano, Bill Nighy, and Kelly Macdonald. Joon-ho is currently looking to
cast a young actress for the lead role in Okja, which is about the relationship
between a young girl and an animal.
Production will start in late 2016 in New York and
Korea for a 2017 release.
