20th Century Fox has had a little bit of trouble
getting Gambit of the ground, but now that Doug Liman has entered the final
stages of negotiations to helm Channing Tatum in the X-Men spinoff, producer
Simon Kinberg opened up a little about the project and revealed what tone they
will be going for the Ragin' Cajun's first standalone movie.
"I mean Deadpool obviously has a
very different, almost antithetical tone to the mainline X-Men movies," Kinberg said when
speaking to Collider. "The X-Men movies are
dramatic and almost operatic, whereas Deadpool is
irreverent and hysterical and sort of a dirty R-rated comedy in many ways. And Gambit will
have its own different flavor and tone to it, will be more of like a heist movie
and a sexy thriller in a way."
It seems that Fox is taking a page
out of Marvel's handbook by diversifying the tones in each of the movies in the
X-Men cinematic universe, plus a heist movie would certainly sit well with
Gambit's thieving expertise.
Kinberg also all but confirmed that
Liman is a done deal and seemed to indicate, but not confirm, that the October
7, 2016 release date has gone out of the window.
"…we have a director in and I don’t know
if I’m allowed to say who it is yet because his deal isn’t done, but it’s
somebody we’re excited about, and somebody I adore, and hopefully we can make
an announcement soon about that," Kinberg said. "But we’ve been spending a lot of time
together—Channing, [Reid Carolin, Tatum’s producing partner], [screenwriter
Joshua Zetumer], the director, and myself—just working on the script, and we
hope to start shooting next spring."
For now Gambit will still hit theaters in 2016, but I wouldn't
be surprised if Fox decided to push it for 2017.
