DreamWorks
has acquired the services of Straight Outta Compton screenwriter Jonathan
Herman to do an "overhaul" on the screenplay for their upcoming "adaptation"
of Masamune Shirow's iconic manga, Ghost in the Shell, starring Scarlett
Johansson and directed by Snow White and the Huntsman director, Rupert Sanders.
The previous Ghost in the Shell drafts were
written by William Wheeler and Jamie Moss.
The Ghost in the Shell manga follows a special ops team
from the Japanese Ministry of Home Affairs called Section 9, which specializes
in fighting technology-related crimes, and cyber-criminals. Responding to Chief
Daisuke Aramaki, the team is led by Major Kusanagi, who is tasked to
investigate a series of crimes perpetrated by the Puppeteer, who hacks humans
with cyberbrains and makes them do his bidding. The rest of the team's
operatives are Batou, Togusa, Ishikawa, Saito, Paz, Borma, and Azuma.
The movie however, it will see Johnson's character lead an
elite task force called Section 9 for a company called Hanka Robotics, and they
have devoted themselves to stopping the most dangerous criminals and extremists
led by The Laughing Man, whose goal is to destroy Hanka's cyber technology.
Ghost in the Shell is expected to go into production
early next year in New Zealand for a March 31, 2017 release.
